The Dorians are known throughout Southern Illinois as the region's premier performers of traditional Irish and Celtic music.  They have performed at festivals throughout Illinois, Missouri and Kentucky and were named "Best Acoustic Band" in the 1997 Southern Illinois Music Awards. Bryan also hosts the weekly syndicated radio music program, Celtic Connections, for WSIU-FM in Carbondale and The Dorians are the house band for this program.

The Dorians

The Dorians are a three-member band based in Carbondale, Illinois, specializing in dance music from the Celtic traditions of Ireland and Scotland, and songs from Ireland, Scotland, England, and North America. The current members have been performing together since 1990.

 

   Bios

Bryan Kelso Crow plays the wooden flute, whistle, and keyboard. He specializes in the singing of humorous songs from Scotland and Ireland. He is the host of "Celtic Connections," a weekly program of Celtic music which is syndicated nationally on public radio stations.

Mike Shanahan plays guitar and cittern, and specializes in the singing songs of immigration and other historical ballads. He is the music program coordinator for the Southern Illinois Festival of Irish Music and Dance.

Mickey Soltys plays fiddle and guitar. He is well versed in Irish fiddle styles as well as Missouri fiddle traditions , and is the lead musician for monthly contradances sponsored by Southern Illinois Friends of Traditional Music and Dance.

 

The band's vocal repertoire includes humorous ballads, traditional love songs, songs of Irish history and politics, and some old and new American folk songs. Their instrumental repertoire ranges from Scottish and Irish reels and jigs to lovely slower tunes. They have played for concert audiences, Highland games, weddings, dances, music and arts festivals, community fundraisers, elementary schools, colleges, historic re-enactments, academic conferences, and on public radio.
